The scene

The 29 Diner is a Historic Landmark located in Fairfax City right off of Fairfax Blvd.  It was delivered in one piece to Fairfax in 1947 and has stood in the original spot since then.  The diner has been under a few ownerships but most recently, a new proprietor named John Wood (also a local young dad) has transformed it into a clean and family friendly destination.

It is rare to find one of these original diners still in operation and has become a new family favorite for us.  Mr. Wood often has vintage car shows, Elvis impersonators and fundraisers for local preschools.  The original countertops, memorabilia and no fuss atmosphere make it a perfect place for parents to relax.  It is open 24 hours Tuesday through Sunday and closed on Mondays.

The food

The 29 Diner focuses on classic American food.  There is real sausage gravy, ginormous burgers, delicious fries and pancakes as big as your face.     The macaroni and cheese, coleslaw and mashed potatoes are homemade from scratch and the beef is all Angus, grass-fed beef from a local source in Baltimore.  All steaks are trimmed in the back of the diner.

Check out the blackboard with the Blue Plate Specials.  There are great values and specials to be ordered from there.  One night we arrived, Barbeque ribs and 2 sides were being offered for around $10.  Oh the homemade desserts!  The menu offers all varieties of desserts.  There were over 10 varieties of freshly made fruit pies including blueberry, blackberry, peach and cherry.  There were many dream pies in addition to 2 varieties of cakes (chocolate and carrot) on our last visit.  The milkshakes are $6 but they are huge and appropriate for 2 people to share.

The kid appeal

Children are welcomed by friendly staff from the moment the door opens.  Although the diner is small, there was plenty of room for our children.  They were given crayons to color a picture that was put on the wall, the retro pink juke box was in operation and a huge basket of colorful lollipops were waiting.

There are 8 generous sized kids meals available for $6.92 from French toast and pancakes to grilled cheese and spaghetti.  The pancakes are as big as the plates!  All kids meal include a drink.
