The Equipment

There are two separate fenced playgrounds both consisting of rubber, cushiony surfaces which can help in case of falls.  I like that there is a latch that only older children can operate by pulling up at the top of the gate.  However, I did see parents neglect to close the gate behind them.  The downside to this large and spacious playground is that there is no shade.  We went on the first day of summer which was overcast and filled with families, but I can’t imagine being here when it’s scorching out.

The toddler playground has two small slides, a teeter-totter, two bucket swings, and two regular swings.  The stand out attraction is the maze.  It’s filled with mirrors, steering wheels (some which are filled with sand for a different sound byte), crawling spaces, and tic-tac-toe boards filled with animal facts, number games, and matching fruits and vegetables.  I love that throughout the maze you see the word hello written in six languages.  Designed for toddlers, parents can safely oversee the action from outside the labyrinth.

The older playground, for use by 5 to 12 year olds includes four swings plus two safety harness swings, stepping stumps, metal rings, cargo chain and dual rock wall, zip line, two sets of teeter-totters, various kinds of jungle gyms, regular balance beams and spring beams, four slides, and four hammocks (not the cloth kind).  I actually saw some adults getting in on the action with some of the climbing equipment although it is not designed to support the weight of adults.

The Scene

In between the two playgrounds is an interactive fountain.  We were disappointed on our visit to read a sign stating that the fountain was closed due to mechanical issues.  In addition to the playground, there are also tennis, basketball and volleyball courts.  We saw several trains of all kinds chug by as the tracks are directly behind the playground and walking trail.  Water fountains, metal picnic tables and benches are in abundance.  There is limited street parking across the street from the playground.

Restrooms

None that we could find.  After our visit, we researched that there is a restroom available at Simpson Park.  The nearest restroom is 4 blocks away at Target.  If you work up an appetite in the same Potomac Yard Center, there is a Baskin Robbins, IHOP, Don Pablo, and my family’s favorite, Hops Grill and Brewery.  They have a nice children’s menu and give complimentary honey butter croissants.
