A 4-D immersive experience takes audience members on mysterious adventures in the world premiere of Jumanji, now at Adventure Theatre-MTC.  The play, based on the classic book by Chris Van Allsburg follows main characters, Peter and Judy on an afternoon that most kids could only dream about.

Jumanji at Adventure TheatrePeter and Judy aren't happy to be left home in their new house while their parents go to a concert. But everything changes when they find a mysterious board game called Jumanji. All of a sudden, the game comes to life - everything that happens in the game starts happening to them. From monkeys to a volcano to a lion, will they ever finish this mysterious magic game and claim Jumanji?

Puppets and a multitude of special effects are used to bring Jumanji to life. The play is being billed as “4D” because as the game comes to life in their living room, it comes to life for the audience as well. Wind, water, and so much more help you feel like you truly are a part of the story. The special effects were my daughter's favorite part of the play. In fact, all of the kids were discussing the awesome effects as they left the show. My daughter also LOVED the puppets. We're still talking about the silly monkeys and what would happen if they came to OUR house and my husband especially liked the snake!

You can always count on Adventure Theatre MTC for wonderous, family-friendly productions and Jumanji is no exception. It's children's theater - so it's geared to young audiences - but my husband and I also really enjoyed the show. The actors are fabulous and there are plenty of jokes for parents as well as the kids. The play is recommended for ages 4 and up, which is likely due to the special effects. My 6 year old can't stop talking about how it rained in Jumanji at Adventure Theatrethe theater (as well as some of the other special effects that we won't spoil for you!)  Tip: before attending the show, familiarize your kids with the plot of the show, they'll have a better experience at the theater.

Adventure Theatre MTC is a small, intimate theater that's perfect for children. Seating is first-come, first served, and there doesn't seem to be a bad seat in the theater. Another tip: the water effects appeared to originate above the second to last row of the theater. (you will get a little damp in that row!) We also liked that it was not too loud, even during the special effects. The show runs approximately one hour with no intermission, a perfect length for children. And we especially appreciated the chance to meet the cast after the show (they're not just great actors - they knew how to connect with their adoring pint-sized fans!).

Located at Glen Echo Park, the theater is a bit of a walk from the parking lot, so leave yourself a little extra time to get there. We couldn't pass up the chance to ride the carousel while we were there and enjoy an ice cream cone from the cafe. There's also a great playground and plenty of picnic tables. Close by is the Glen Echo Park Aquarium that looked like a lot of fun, as well as various artists and other activities going on. You could definitely make a day out of seeing the play and enjoying the park.
