  • Indoor pool
  • Museums
  • Live music
  • And everything in between

Here are 57 things to do with kids in Pittsburgh:

Table of Contents

#1 The Frick Pittsburgh

Our first stop in Pittsburgh was at The Frick, an art and historical center with a number of attractions and activities to see, including:

  • Grable Visitor Center
  • Car and Carriage Museum
  • Playhouse
  • Greenhouse and Gardens
  • Frick Art Museum
  • Clayton (the Gilded Age home of Henry Clay Frick and his wife Adelaide from 1882 to 1905 before they moved to New York)

Local tip: The Frick Museum is also a great place for summer camps if you live close enough.

All of these attractions are free, except for tours of the mansion and special exhibitions at the Art Museum. Even the parking is free!

#2 National Aviary

The next day, we visited the National Aviary, the largest in the country and full of different bird species.

They have some awesome shows which are each 20-minutes long and well worth the extra fee.

Important: Make sure to get a schedule of the daily feedings and special activities as soon as you arrive.

Every room of the Aviary showcases a different environment.

The first room, Cloud Forest, near the parking lot, has a roadrunner, a toucan, and a sloth.

Other environments include:

  • Wetlands (flamingos)
  • Grasslands (finches)
  • Tropical Rainforests (macaws)
  • Condor Court
  • Eagle Hall

Canary’s Call explores how birds reflect environmental factors. The highlight of this area was seeing fruit bats in a bright room. You can feed the colorful lorikeets in Canary’s Call for an additional fee.

#3 Andy Warhol Museum

Next, we visited the Andy Warhol Museum (a Carnegie museum), a mere 15-minute walk away from The National Aviary.

Most of the Andy Warhol Museum will hold little interest and be inappropriate for children younger than 16, but there are some exceptions.

Children will love the exhibit Silver Clouds on the 5th floor. Warhol created silver balloon-like structures filled with helium that kids could move and catch. Choreographer Merce Cunningham used them as stage decor for a dance.

Note: You can read more about what else you’ll find that you may not want the kids to see here

The basement has a large art room called the Factory, where people of all ages can create works inspired by Warhol’s techniques. There is also a kid’s lounge area with picture books.

#4 Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Museum of Art

In Pittsburgh’s Historic North Side, you’ll find Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Museum of Art and Carnegie Museum of Natural History, which are world-class museums and are actually connected. Hence, you get two museums for the admission price of one.

We also explored the Hall of Gems and Minerals, which has a good collection.

Our favorite part of the Art Museum was the Decorative Arts Hall with a lamp and stained glass windows by Tiffany.

There are lots of both permanent and temporary exhibits to see.

#7 University of Pittsburgh’s Cathedral of Learning

A truly unique Pittsburgh attraction is the University of Pittsburgh’s Cathedral of Learning.

Pittsburgh’s ethnic communities decorated classrooms in the style of their home country. Currently, there are thirty nationality rooms.

As you enter each room, press the switch near the light switch, and you will hear music from the country, plus narration about the architecture, furnishings, and objects in the exhibit cases.

These rooms would be a wonderful way of teaching your children about different cultures.

#57 Legacy Lanes

Legacy Lanes is an incredible establishment that combines a

  • Bowling alley
  • Bar
  • Restaurant
  • Axe-throwing venue

You’ll be captivated by the remarkable retro ambiance when you step inside.

The furnishings, the carpet, and the Pittsburgh-themed decor adorning the lanes create a fantastic atmosphere.

If you’re a bowler, you’ll be delighted to know that Legacy Lanes features a Pro Shop where you can find everything you need to enhance your game. It’s worth checking out if you require assistance with your existing equipment.

Regardless of whether you’re a seasoned bowler or not, all ages are guaranteed to have a blast at Legacy Lanes.

Even if you choose not to bowl, there are plenty of other entertainment options available to keep you engaged. The food they offer is simply fantastic, and the service is top-notch.

One aspect that particularly impressed me was the convenience they offer. You can have your meal from the restaurant delivered directly to your bowling lane table, making the entire experience even more enjoyable and hassle-free.
