Whether your child already loves the book Blueberries for Sal by Robert McCloskey or has never read it, they will love the funny musical adaptation of the classic children’s tale showing at Adventure Theater.

With winter on the horizon, both bears and humans need to prepare for the long, cold season.  Sal (short for Sally) and her mother dream of making Grandmother’s delicious blueberry pie and set out to Blueberry Hill to collect all of the blueberries they will need for an entire winter’s worth of pies, jams, pancakes, and more.  Meanwhile, on the other side of the Hill, Mama Bear and Little Bear set out to find blueberries as well, but the bears have no intention of collecting berries.  Instead, the pair of bears set out to fill their tummies with as many blueberries as possible to last them through the upcoming hibernation.   There are, of course, a few problems along the way.  Little Sal does not want to save any blueberries -- she wants to eat every last one she picks despite her mother’s clear instructions to fill her pail.  On the other hand, little bear isn’t very interested in eating blueberries at all and would rather take a nap.    Eventually, both little Sal and little bear get separated from the Mothers.  Along the way they meet other animals roaming Blueberry Hill and learn some valuable lessons before each being reunited with their mothers.

Blueberries for Sal is full of laughs and song from beginning to end.  The entire cast consists of only four women and they play their various roles exceedingly well. Sophie Schulman as the fearless five-year-old Little Sal is hilariously convincing as a clumsy little girl who just can’t help herself when it comes to eating blueberries straight from the bush.  Alex DeBard is similarly funny playing the obstinate Little Bear who is afraid of humans and hibernation and has had enough of her mother’s demands to eat more blueberries.  Both the human and bear mothers, played by Sarah Corey and Karen Vincent, are relatable.

My eight and three year olds both loved the show.  Although the set of Blueberry Hill is filled with blueberries, they are barely visible until they light-up when picked creating a magical experience.  Adding to the magic are animal-shaped clouds that fly through the sky, a larger-than-life roaming moose, and two families of birds that sing and dispense advice.  My kids agreed that the best thing about the show is that it is funny.
