Cirque du Soleil is known for being other-worldly and fantastical. The current production now in Baltimore, Crystal, does not disappoint and is a great choice for those who would like to introduce their children to the world of Cirque du Soleil.

Crystal is a little different than other Cirque du Soleil shows. It is performed entirely on ice and rather than relying solely on live music, Crystal also features music from Beyoncé and U-2.

Crystal follows the journey of a girl named Crystal who accidentally falls through a frozen lake and explores the various possibilities her life could take. Along the way, there is magnificent skating, dancing, and acrobatics. There are some elements of a typical circus, like clowns, juggling, and areal performances, but the acts are entirely unpredictable which makes them even the more incredible.

I saw the show with kids ranging in age from three to ten. They were all mesmerized by the show from start to finish. Favorite acts included an ice-hockey “game” with awe-inspiring jumps and giant “pucks” that are tossed about, a magical dance with Crystal and a beau that has them both flying through the air and gliding across the ice, and synchronized pole acrobats whose act includes gymnastics that have them tumbling from near the ceiling. Kids and adults alike made audible gasps and laughed out loud throughout the show.

I’ve seen two other Cirque du Soleil productions and this one is more accessible and less “arty” than other Cirque du Soleil shows, which makes it more accessible for families. Children will also be able to relate to scenes of children in school and at the playground.

Cirque du Soleil: Crystal deserves a spot on your family’s weekend list.

Tips:

  • Crystal will be playing at Capitol One Arena Wednesday, Dec. 5 through Sunday, Dec. 9, 2018
  • Arrive a little early! Before the show starts, the cast put on a mini-show and even has a snowball fight with the audience. It’s fun to watch and should be a part of your experience.
  • The show runs about two and half hours with intermission.
  • There are several parking garages around Capitol One Arena or consider taking metro to the adjacent Gallery Place/Chinatown metro stop.  There is limited metered two-hour parking around the arena but since the show is longer than two hours this isn’t a good choice for this performance.
