It’s not hard to relate. It’s the first day of Third Grade and Judy Moody has had the most boring summer... and has nothing to wear! She’s certain that all of the other kids will show up wearing shirts from their favorite summer destinations, but Judy has to settle for plain stripes.

Judy’s parents decide to make-up for a lackluster summer by taking Judy and her brother Stink to a nearby island for the weekend. Judy’s Mom wants to explore shops and restaurants, but Judy and Stink opt instead to go on a treasure hunt in hopes of winning a t-shirt that proves they went on cool vacation. The treasure hunt takes them all over the island meeting pirates, getting clues from talking parrots, interpreting Morse Code and wandering through the graveyard at night.

I am not exaggerating when I say that my daughter and several other audience members were literally on the edge of their seats waiting to see how the treasure hunt unfolded. There were plenty of jokes and songs to keep even the very young children in the audience engaged.

Although I’ve never read any of the best-selling Judy Moody books myself, the two seven year olds I went with assured me that Judy and Stink were true to the characters they have come to love in the books. As a Mom, I appreciated that Judy was not the idealized version of a child we often see in plays, but had reactions and moods like those we all see in our real-life children. I also liked the facts Judy interjected throughout the play, especially about strong female figures from history including pirates and doctors.

Good to know:
  • The play runs from April 20-June 3rd, 2018.
  • Judy Moody and Stink is recommended for ages 4+ but there were a few kids as young as two in the audience at the performance I saw and they enjoyed the play as well.
  • The play is about an hour long, without intermission.
  • Adventure Theatre is located in Glen Echo Park, which has a nice playground, carousel, and other activities. Plan to spend the afternoon in the park if you see the play on a nice day!
  • Parking is free, but it can take 5-10 minutes to walk from the lot to the theatre, especially with young children, so plan accordingly.
  • Tickets are $19.50, although some discounts may be available.
  • Seating is first-come, first served so you may want to arrive early if sitting close to the stage is important to you. However, it is a small theatre so there really aren’t any bad seats.
  • Come dressed as a pirate and you will be allowed to take a photo in costume on the stage after the show.
  • There is an autism friendly performance on May 19, 2018, 2 pm and an ASL-interpreted performance on April 28, 2018, 2 pm
