If your young child likes to belly laugh, then Paper Dreams should have a high spot on your summer bucket list. Paper Dreams is designed for the youngest theatre-goers and is the first encounter with live theatre for many of them.  Imagination Stage ensures that children’s first encounters with theatre are fun, enjoyable, and enriching.

Paper Dreams follows two friends who navigate the world around them in short vignettes perfect for shorter attention spans. The friends engage in a hilarious back-and-forth over colorful items of clothing that any toddler who thinks what the other guy has is better will relate to easily; explore the many possibilities of what can be done with a simple piece of paper from making balls to birds to fish that swim in the ocean; dance along with each other and the audience; and play house. The props are colorful and simple and are interspersed with clever video projections which end with the friends wandering off under a rainbow.

To help keep the kids engaged, they are invited to participate at many points throughout the show from making their own paper creations to playing freeze-dance.  At the end of the show, children are invited into the performance space to play with more paper!

Paper Dreams was conceived by Barcelona’s Mons Dansa Dance Theatre Company and has a decidedly European feel. There are no words at all in the play and children and adults alike will appreciate the dance and physical humor used throughout the show to tell the story.

My three year old son was entranced by the show and the entire audience was nearly silent throughout, which proves how well it does at keeping very young children engaged.

Children and caregivers are encouraged to sit on the floor in a semi-circle surrounding the performance area but seats are also available. Rest assured that no child is expected to sit perfectly still or stay perfectly quiet during the show, making it a friendly environment for all families.
