Chances are you are already familiar with the characters from Peanuts, but you’ve probably never seen them live on stage before.  Seeing Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy, Linus, Sally, and Schroeder come to life (and even give high-fives to the audience) is a treat for Peanuts fans new and old.
At Imagination Stage, we join Charlie Brown and friends for a typical day of school, lunch homework, baseball, glee club, homework, playing with the family pet Snoopy, and more.  Throughout it all, the gang grapples with the insecurities of not being good at everything from flying a kite to writing book reports, unrequited love, procrastination, sibling rivalry, the feeling that no one wants to play with you, and other struggles familiar to children everywhere.  You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown doesn’t shy away from the tough issues of childhood and is very relatable as a result.
Of course the gang from Peanuts is a lot of fun and the overarching message is one of finding joy and happiness in the small things, like ice cream, chasing bunnies, climbing trees.  Another important takeaway is the importance of liking yourself and knowing that you are enough the way you are, whether you like Beethoven, random facts, or just hanging out with your dog.  Because the play follows the kids from Peanuts throughout a day-in-the-life it’s not a typical storyline, but rather a series of short events making it like a newspaper comic strip that doesn’t reveal too much at once.
All of the elements of the original Peanuts you know and love are in this production.  Charlie Brown says “Good Grief,”  Snoopy flies against the Red Barron, Schroeder plays the piano, Linus has his blanket, and Lucy runs her “Doctor is In” stand to dispense some much needed advice to her friends.
You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown features incredible acting and singing worthy of a Broadway production.  Familiar songs like the Peanuts theme, Happiness, and many other tunes are played by live pianist.  My ten year old son describes the play as “musical, funny, and interactive.”  My three year old describes the play as “super-funny.”
